Home video security systems, also known as Closed Circuit TV (CCTV), are becoming more and more popular for residential use. What once was considered suitable almost exclusively for medium to large sized businesses is now quite common in the private home. These systems are excellent for protecting homes and businesses from burglary, or in the case that a burglary does occur, providing police with a record of the event.
 
You may assume that home video security is very complicated, and at one time you would have been right, but fortunately it’s no longer true. Once you have learned how CCTV security systems work, you’ll probably want to get one for your own home. Really, it’s just cameras recording video information and making it available for you to view through monitors. Normally, these monitors will provide a black and white picture, as opposed to color, because black and white provides higher resolution – usually between five hundred and a thousand lines – at reasonable cost.
 
The most important part of the system is the camera. It is best to have several cameras strategically placed around your property so you have a clear view of what’s happening in all areas of your yard. Hide your cameras so that burglars won’t try to disable them, but be sure not to hide them so well that they can’t get a clear view! Also, try to locate them so they can record a clear picture of your property borders.
 
The next component of a home video security system is the coaxial cables. These cables carry the video signals from the camera to the monitor. They’re available in any size you need just about everywhere. If you buy your equipment as a system, some coax cable will be included, but you might need to buy more depending on where you decide to place your cameras and the size of your property.
 
Another necessary item is a switcher. These allow you to run several video feeds to the same monitor. Usually, a switcher will cycle through feeds until it senses activity near a particular camera. At that point, the switcher will begin sending signals from the camera that has seen the movement.
 
Finally, you’ll probably want to include a VCR. Recording with a VCR is a great way to enhance your home video security at very low cost. It allows you to not only see live activity, but to record anything that might happen while you aren’t there. This is particularly useful for those that travel a lot, but really, is a must for just about all of us. If anything happens, you will have a record of it that the police can use in court.
 
Now that you know how CCTV surveillance systems work, you can see why these systems have become so popular. Since the systems are so affordable, you may want to consider joining all the folks who already use them in their homes. With just a bit of further research into home video security, you’ll be a well-educated consumer able to make the best decision about which system will work best for you today.
